Travel Smart: A Chiropractor’s Guide to Staying Comfortable and Healthy on the Road

Blog Post:
Whether you’re road-tripping up the California coast or flying across the country, travel can take a toll on your body—especially your spine and joints. As a chiropractor in San Carlos with over 30 years of experience helping patients move and feel better, I’ve seen how common travel-related aches and pains can be. The good news? A little preparation goes a long way.
Here are some simple, chiropractor-approved tips to help keep your body feeling great while you travel:

1. Bring Your Own Pillow

Hotel pillows can be unpredictable—too flat, too puffy, or just uncomfortable. Bringing your own pillow (especially a cervical support pillow if you use one at home) helps maintain proper neck alignment while you sleep and reduces the risk of waking up with stiffness or pain.

2. Use Large Ziplock Bags for Ice Therapy

Travel often means sitting for long periods, which can lead to inflammation in the lower back or knees. Pack a few gallon-sized Ziplock bags in your luggage—fill them with ice from the hotel or convenience store, and you’ve got a quick, makeshift ice pack to reduce pain or swelling.

3. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Long drives and flights often lead to dehydration, especially if you’re drinking caffeine or alcohol. Staying hydrated helps maintain spinal disc health, reduces fatigue, and can even lower the risk of muscle cramps and injuries. Aim for water, not sugary drinks, and keep a refillable bottle with you.

4. Stretch Every Time You Stop

Whether it’s a bathroom break on a road trip or walking the terminal at the airport, use every opportunity to move and stretch. Try these:
  • Shoulder rolls
  • Hamstring stretches
  • Gentle spinal twists
  • Calf raises
These help improve circulation and prevent stiffness from setting in.

5. Use Lumbar Support

If your car or plane seat doesn’t offer enough support, use a rolled-up towel, small travel pillow, or even a jacket to support your lower back. Proper lumbar support helps maintain the natural curve of your spine and reduces stress on your discs.

6. Pack Light and Lift Smart

Try to use a suitcase with wheels and avoid carrying heavy bags on one shoulder. When lifting, use your legs—not your back. Bend at the knees, keep your core engaged, and avoid twisting your body while lifting luggage into overhead bins or car trunks.

7. Consider a Pre- or Post-Trip Adjustment

A chiropractic adjustment before your trip can help your body be in the best alignment for travel. And if you’re feeling any stiffness or discomfort after you return, schedule a visit to reset your spine and prevent further issues.
